One thing I like in my apocalypse stories is seeing the world go to shit.
One thing I love in my apocalypse stories is seeing a recognizable world go to shit.
Think A24's Civil War, Omar El-Akkad's American War, flashbacks in Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale. Hell, I even count the D.C. missions in Modern Warfare 2. There's something shocking about seeing our world collide with the cataclysms we only see in fiction; it reminds us that the world we inhabit isn't a given.
And the White House on fire is just a really cool set piece.
So what if, instead of showing the reader a political or cultural apocalypse, they saw a technological one? What if I explored the origins of a cyberpunk dystopia, origins set somewhere halfway-recognizable?
This is a lot of words to say, "I think this is a cool idea." Cascade is a novel I aspire to finish, and I'll upload chapters here to hold myself accountable. Happy reading.
